Context

After conducting Organizational Research in the earlier project, the team used the findings to inform the Product team's initiation and planning (Fy 23-24). Now the next challenge was prioritizing User needs based on the Insights we gathered and defining an enhanced User-experience for our product offerings.

Project Overview

Led a user-centered redesign of the API Marketplace, improving usability, API discoverability, and user experience for internal teams and external partners while creating leadership dashboards to track API engagement metrics.

 
 

THE CHALLENGE

The API Marketplace's interface could have been more intuitive, leading to low adoption rates and difficulty accessing APIs. Both technical and non-technical users experienced frustration in discovering APIs and navigating the platform. Search ability was a significant challenge that needed to be addressed.

I initiated another project to interview our API Consumers and Providers. These were our potential Marketplace, Control Panel, and API Life-cycle, users.   

 

Approach

User Research: Conducted comprehensive stakeholder interviews, user personas, and usability testing to understand diverse user needs.

Wireframing & User Journeys: Developed wireframes and mapped user journeys, addressing critical pain points identified in the research.

 

Design Execution

Mid-Fidelity Prototypes: Used Figma to iterate on mid/high-fidelity wireframes, improving search and filter functionality.

Leadership Dashboards: Created reporting dashboards for real-time insights into API adoption and user behavior.

 

PRIMARY RESEARCH findings

  • Getting to know my users was the first step in the process. I wanted them to feel like they could share everything with me - good or bad - and see this not as an interview but as an everyday conversation.

  • I spoke to over twelve stakeholders and synthesized findings to create visuals that helped the product owner tell a good story with user needs in mind. The goal was to build enough context around the API enablement team's approach to creating its offerings, enabling internal product teams to enhance their product development.

  • Collaborating closely with the Product Owner, I helped define the Value Proposition, the team's capabilities, The system of offerings, and a future state service blueprint to help align the users and business needs with all relevant stakeholders.

 

Outcome

  • This redesign has significantly enhanced the API Marketplace's usability, enabling seamless API interactions and improving overall user experience and business outcomes. This success should reassure stakeholders of the positive impact of our efforts.

  • 50% increase in API discoverability and 25% boost in user satisfaction.

  • Leadership dashboards enabled data-driven decisions across departments.
