Context

After conducting initial research, our team transitioned to a formal product team focusing on Agile development. Our challenge was prioritizing user needs based on insights and defining a user-friendly future state for API consumption and development.

THE CHALLENGE

The team faced the challenge of adopting Agile methodologies and identifying pain points in the current API development lifecycle. I initiated a research project focused on understanding the needs of API Consumers and Providers across the organization. This research aimed to improve the experience of internal BI employees as they searched, found, and used APIs for digital product development.

Existing State - User Journey

Research & Approach

Over six weeks, I conducted qualitative research, including user interviews and heuristic evaluations of existing systems. I interviewed twelve participants, mapped existing user journeys and personas, and synthesized findings into actionable insights. These insights translated into user stories and served as a foundation for Agile product development.

Tools & Methodologies:

  • Figma: For wireframing and prototyping mid/high-fidelity wireframes.

  • UserZoom: Used for conducting remote unmoderated testing and gathering usability insights.

  • Adobe Analytics: To monitor API adoption and improve developer handoff.

Primary Research Findings

I collaborated closely with the product owner to create visuals that conveyed user needs and synthesized the research findings into actionable opportunities. The study highlighted the importance of finding APIs quickly and how product teams could enhance digital product development by leveraging existing APIs in the ecosystem.

Collaborative Strategy

The research enabled seamless stakeholder alignment, allowing Integration Architects, Engineers, and Leadership to buy into the new API enablement strategy. The collaboration helped establish the API team's value proposition and capabilities while defining a future-state service blueprint.

Outcome

This project was instrumental in maturing the UX practice at Boehringer Ingelheim, helping the organization understand the value of conducting user research. The showcase at leadership meetings inspired stakeholders to consider user needs more closely, creating opportunity spaces within product teams for more user-centric development.
